Medical Treatment in Poland

NFZ ('National Health Fund') Treatment is free of charge for all EU nationals but you will have to pay for any of the medicines you may need. Any students from outside the EU will need to have their own medical insurance.

Visiting a Doctor

If you need to go to the doctor you will need an appointment. If you live with a host family you can see their 'Lekarz Pierwszego Kontaktu' (General Practitioner) who will sign you in as a visitor and this is free of charge. If you live in self-catering accommodation, contact Tellus and we will make an appointment for you.

Visiting a Dentist

Dental treatment is free in Poland but all appointments need to be booked in considerable advance making this option less than ideal if you are in pain. Private dentists are resonably priced and much quicker to book. You should be able to claim this back from your insurance as well (if you have bought such). If you need a dentist, please, contact Tellus and we will make the necessary arrangements.

Going to Hospital

If you have a serious illness, a medical emergency (life treatening) or have injured yourself in an accident, an ambulance should be called and you will be taken to a hospital. To call for an ambulance dial 999 and ask for ambulance (Although Polish 'Ambulans' is pronounced in the same way the operator will not nescessarely speak English). You will need to give the full name of the person requiring medical assistance, their date of birth, sex, and the exact location, e.g., the nearest house number (or landmark) and street name.

If you suffer from an injury that is not life threatening or suffer from a medical condition, which requires immediate medical attention you'll need to get to the hospital yourself rather then call an ambulance. In such case, please ask your host family or call Tellus for assistance. Alternatively take a taxi asking for nearest 'SOR' (Hospital Rescue Ward).

Pharmacy

All medicines in Poland are paid for. Although Polish prescriptions are subsidized by the NFZ, prices vary considerably depending what medicine you purchase. If you can't afford the medicine you are being prescribed in the first place you can always demand a less expensive equivalent.

YOU MUST ALWAYS INFORM TELLUS IF YOU ARE ILL, NO MATTER HOW SERIOUS IT IS
